Are you tired of the way that we play video games these days? With nearly all modern gaming technology, you must use a controller or some kind of similar external interface to play games, and that’s just not right. Games should be more involved, where it feels like we are literally in it. The Nintendo Wii has gotten pretty close to this dream, but you still need to use a controller with several buttons. What if there was a way to play games where the controller was your body, and your fingers were the buttons? This may sound futuristic, but with the Microsoft Kinect system, it has become reality.
Kinect was originally known as Project Natal, but more details about the project and the actual name came out at E3 2010, one of the largest (if not the best) video game expos in the world. It was here that Microsoft displayed some demos of games and explained the system in additional depth. We still don’t know the full extent to which Kinect is capable, but it is clear that a lot of work has been put into this and it will certainly be great. If the E3 event taught us anything, it’s that this technology is the real deal.
If Kinect is so great, why has it taken so long to come up with this? For one, innovations always take a long time to come out, especially when people have been stuck doing things the same old way. Companies were afraid to mess with the traditional controller interface, as that is what people are familiar with, and taking risks could be potentially devastating to a firm’s cash flow. But when someone takes a risk and it pays off, it pays off big, and that is what is going to happen with Microsoft and their revolutionary new way of gaming.
